PDF vs Kindle: which ebook format is right for you?

When it comes to reading ebooks, format matters more than most people realise. The two most common options are PDF and Kindle (MOBI/AZW), and each has its strengths. Here’s a quick guide to help you choose.

PDF: the universal option

PDFs work on virtually every device — laptops, tablets, phones, and most e-readers. The layout is fixed, which means the book looks exactly as the designer intended, with consistent formatting, images, and typography.

Best for: Books with complex layouts, cookbooks with images, activity books, reference guides, and anything you might want to print.

Less ideal for: Long reading sessions on small screens, as you may need to zoom and scroll on a phone.

Kindle: the reader’s choice

Kindle format is designed specifically for reading. Text reflows to fit your screen, you can adjust font size and style, and it integrates beautifully with Amazon’s ecosystem including Kindle devices, the Kindle app, and Whispersync.

Best for: Text-heavy books like novels, self-improvement, business books, and anything you want to read on a Kindle device.

Less ideal for: Books with complex layouts, lots of images, or precise formatting.

Our recommendation

If you mainly read on a Kindle device, buy the Kindle edition from Amazon. If you read on a tablet, laptop, or want maximum flexibility, buy the PDF direct from us. Many of our readers buy both — the PDF for reference and the Kindle edition for reading on the go.

All Calibre Books titles purchased directly from our website come as PDFs. Many are also available on Amazon Kindle. Check individual book pages for availability.
